ROPPONGI CROSSING 2010: CAN THERE BE ART?

March 20 - July 4, 2010

Roppongi Crossing is a series of exhibitions, held once every three years, that introduces the most exciting artists working in Japan and Japanese artists of today. This, the third Roppongi Crossing, includes works of photography, sculpture, installation, video, graffiti art and performance by around 20 artists and artist units.
Today, with our outlook on the future still obscured by the shadows of the global financial crisis, the trajectory of Japanese contemporary art seems unclear. In this exhibition, we take this period of uncertainty as a valuable opportunity to reconsider the real nature and potential of art. Returning to the fundamental question of "Can there be art?", Roppongi Crosses brings together works that depict various social issues, art projects that present new possibilities by their collaborative or trans-genre nature, creative activities generated from the streets, a stage of our daily life, and the work of a new generation that suggests the emergence of a new aesthetic. A new Japan will emerge from this period of uncertainty, and Roppongi Crossing provides a hint of what it will be like.
