STEVENSON is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Viviane Sassen, her second at the gallery following Moshi in 2010. The show brings together photographs from her recent Parasomnia series and some from her previous series, Flamboya.
Sassen spent her childhood years in East Africa. She describes that, on her family's return to the Netherlands, she felt like a foreigner in her homeland but knew that she had also been an outsider in Africa.Parasomnia animates these feelings of dislocation between home and away, night and day, life and dreams. The series comprises photographs taken in West and East Africa over the past two years, as well as a few taken in Europe, which frame her enigmatic and often haunting narratives.
As a New York Times critic recently noted (in a review of the Museum of Modern Art's New Photography exhibition), Sassen's images 'convey how strangely vivid and tantalizingly sad the world can seem to a mind and eye divested of the usual filters of perception'. Her photographs constantly disrupt our usual perceptions because some are carefully constructed while others are incidental scenes she encounters on her travels, leaving us unsure which are her imaginary fictions and which scenes from life. Her distinct visual language is articulated by a deep awareness of the formalist concerns of painting, sculpture and photography, as well as an acute sense of colour and the optical resonances of pattern and design.
The exhibition is accompanied by her latest book, titled Parasomnia(published by Prestel, 2011, and featuring a short story by Moses Isegawa). This book follows Flamboya (first published by Contrasto in 2008) which has been widely acclaimed.
Sassen was born in 1972 in Amsterdam, where she now lives. She first studied fashion design, followed by photography at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) and Ateliers Arnhem. Her work was first published in avant-garde fashion magazines and is regularly commissioned by prominent designers. She was awarded the Dutch art prize, the Prix de Rome, in 2007, and in 2011 won the International Center of Photography in New York's Infinity Award for Applied/Fashion/Advertising Photography. She is one of six artists selected for the 2011 New Photography exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Solo exhibitions have taken place at FORMA in Milan (2009) and FOAM in Amsterdam (2008), among other venues. Recent group shows include No Fashion, Please! Photography between gender and lifestyle at the Vienna Kunsthalle (2011); Figure and Ground: Dynamic Landscape at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto as part of the Contact Photography Festival (2011); and the 2010 Brighton Photo Biennale, curated by Martin Parr.

Refusant de choisir, les œuvres de ce marseillais prêtent à rire et à réfléchir, tissant une trame poétique entre compositions et réalité. Reflet(s) d'un esprit joueur et d'une démarche dans laquelle l'esthétisme ne prend jamais le pas sur la représentation, cette exposition – fruit d'une carte blanche proposée à l'artiste par les Editions du Tingre – investira la Galerie Seize entre le 7 décembre et la fin de l'année.

Viviane Sassen: Flamboya
Two women sitting on a staircase are symbiotically connected through their braided hair.
A man at the beach is carrying a child bent over his head like an extravagant hat.
A boy is holding his hand in front of his eyes – the hand gleaming golden like the glaring sun.
From 30 of october to 3 of december the Kominek Gallery is presenting the series “Flamboya”,
photographed by Viviane Sassen between 2003 and 2006. Her mysterious and poetic images of young men
and women from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Ghana are shifting between staging and spontaneity,
fantasy and realism, intimacy and distance. The faces of the portrayed dissolve in shadows, are turned away,
hidden or alienated through body paintings. Their bodies are forming exceptional poses, are lying on the ground
or merging with others into artistic and surreal sculptures.
Born in the year 1972 in Amsterdam Viviane Sassen lived with her family in a little village in Kenya during the age
of two to five. After studying fashion design in Arnhem and photography in Utrecht she returned to the places of her
childhood in 2001 and started searching for the impressions and memories of that time. The colors and patterns, the
atmosphere and the rhythm of the country are the things that remained and that are conjured up and transferred
artistically in Sassens photographs.
Her images are like a chain of associations and sensations, are visual notes not following a preset order
or chronology. In the exhibition the photographs are coming together just like in the scrapbook that
Viviane Sassen is carrying with her on her travels through Africa to collect inspirations, Polaroids
and quotes. Bigger and smaller prints with different frames and interspaces are opening up
new perspectives and perceptions with each glance. And like always in the Kominek Gallery there is also
a book accompanying the exhibition. Here again multi-facetted graphic impressions and connections
are unfolding. Through the combination of full and half pages particular images and details are
overlaying and thereby endorsing the openness and ambiguity, the playfulness and mysteriousness
that are lending Viviane Sassens work their special fascination and attraction.

Mario Hugo
New York based artist, designer and co-founder of Hugo & Marie. He has worked with clients that include Nike, Dolce & Gabbana, British Airways, EMI Music, MTV, and Channel 4. He has been featured in a number of publications including Flaunt, Dazed andConfused, Varoom, and Phaidon’s Area2, where he was featured as “One of the 100 most creative designers to have emerged on the international scene over the past 5 years”.
Roger Ballen
Born in New York City in 1950, Roger Ballen has lived and worked in Johannesburg, South Africa for almost 30 years. He has produced many series of works which has evolved from photo-journalism to a unique artistic vision since 1982. Ballen’s work has been shown in important institutions throughout the world and is represented in many Museum Collections such as Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England and Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA.
SMAL PAZE
SMAL (Mirko Borsche) and PAZE (Thomas Kartsolis) are graphic designer based in Munich Germany.
Their work is responsible for visual output of Gomma Records, Jetzt Magazine, Zeit Magazin, Amore Magazine.
Mirko Borsche found own design company Bureau Mirko Borsche in 2007.
Thomas Lelu
Born in Paris. lives and works in Paris.
He is a contemporary artist and writer. And he is also known as the art director of Playboy France.
Viviane Sassen
1972 born in Amsterdam.
Hers carer started as a fashion photographer in 90's. Hers work appears in magazines such as French VOGUE, Purple, i-D and POP magazine. In 2001 Sassen began regular trips to Africa, where she had lived as a child.
Hers solo show at FOAM Amsterdam, at James Dazinger New York, Forma in Milan and the Brighton Biennale 2010.

Mothi Limbu is a Marseille-based artist, art director, graphic designer, illustrator.
He is a co-founder of creative studio HappyMess. He mainly works for Marseille influential company Kulte, La dame Noir and Underten.
This time he designed DUMB cover from his series "Paradox and Incorrect way".
